36 – Chronicle (2012)

My Rating: 9/10

Synopsis: Three boys – Andrew, Matt, and Steve, develop telekinetic superpower after making contact with an unknown object underground. This new found power might just be the answer for the introvert and aching Andrew to end his suffering once and for all.

The low-budget, wide-release, “found footage” filming phenomenon in Hollywood continues. This time tackling a new subject far from horror flicks that exhausted it. Its not a typical superhero story though, it’s more of a teenage bullying story if I may be blunt,  they just happen to stumble upon a superpower well. Chronicle worked its charm in the superheroes year that is 2012, and built a strong story out of a seemingly tired and recycled plot. While there’s nothing new here, it actually cooked something that cannot be easily forgotten. The honesty it portrayed in detail brought it to life. The experiments that the three did with their powers are the things I surely would do if I were in their situation. They have given voice to characters in the real world that are hungry for power (Andrew), adventurous (Steve), and cautious and grounded (Matt).

The greatest thing about it I think is there was a clear goal the director wants to achieve and I would go right on about saying that he achieved it. Power may not be the root of all evil, but it sure is going to take you down with it if you wield it using the wrong motives. Chronicle built strongly on that foundation. Viewers know catastrophe is right around the corner, yet it had never been predictable, and the climax surely delivered without being over the top. Bullying is another topic it addressed and it showcased it as real as it gets. There are no fillers on the movie, every scene served its purpose. Were there any problems with the movie? Right now, I can’t think of any, the only reason I gave it a 9 and not a 10 is I think it hasn’t reached its full potential. It could have been stronger, I guess.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
